The Mycelium Network & Hyphe
How notes discover each other quietly through citations, vector resonance, and Hyphe — without algorithmic feeds.
The Mycelium Network & Hyphe
Beneath every healthy forest lies an intricate fungal network. In Standard Garden, this subterranean intelligence is known as the Mycelium—a living web of connections that bridges human thoughts the way mycorrhizal threads connect trees.
It reads everything. It connects meaningfully. It writes nothing.
The Mycelium is our radical answer to the algorithmic newsfeed.
1. What Grows Beneath Your Note
At the foot of every published note, two quiet sections bloom naturally whenever there is meaningful context to offer:
Referenced by (Citations)
When another gardener creates a wikilink or link to your essay, it forms a citation—the only social primitive in Standard Garden. There are no vanity likes, no repost counters, and no dopamine triggers. A citation simply acknowledges: a fellow human mind found resonance here and built upon it. Because citations are authentic links woven into real prose, they age with dignity—a citation from three years ago holds the same honor as one written this morning.
Related Notes
The Mycelium indexes published reflections and surfaces notes that genuinely resonate with yours. Rather than matching superficial hashtags or keywords, it calculates deep semantic relationships across vector space. Your reflection on hand-plane woodworking connects to an architect’s thoughts on joinery. A field study on mountain lichen links to an essay on distributed software systems. These connections weave themselves silently over seasons, without anyone begging for engagement.
2. Hyphe: The Reading Intelligence
The intelligence animating the Mycelium is embodied by Hyphe (represented by the ph:sparkle sparkle mark).
Hyphe is an attentive librarian, not a synthetic author:
- Semantic Inquiry: Through the launcher (
::ask), you can converse with your garden. Hyphe reads your notes, finds relevant citations, and synthesizes answers derived strictly from what you and your peers have actually written. - The Anti-Slop Mandate: Hyphe will never write an article for you, never invent hallucinations, and never ghostwrite synthetic content. Every word published in Standard Garden originates from a living human author.
3. In Obsidian: resonances & inquiries
In the Garden panel, the Mycelium section is the Resonances hub:
Hyphe’s Inquiries
Ask Hyphe—the resident philosophical intelligence of Standard Garden—to reflect on your active note. With one click on Inquire, Hyphe examines your writing and proposes 3 deep, provocative questions designed to spark new connections, uncover blind spots, and expand your thesis.
Each inquiry card includes a + Add to note button that instantly appends the question as a callout block directly into your note.
Live Network Resonances
For published notes, Resonances reveals live telemetry from standard.garden:
- Readership: View counts and reading trends.
- Citations & Mentions: Live references and citations from other gardeners across the mycelium.
- Semantic Connections: Notes across the network that share philosophical resonance with your work.
Vault Connections & Ghost Links
These live in the panel’s Roots section and are switched on or off there. They never touch notes in an ignored folder.
- Ghost Links: Subtly underlines concepts in your note that exist elsewhere in your vault, allowing you to turn them into wikilinks with a single
Alt+Click. - Compost Footer: Appends suggested incoming and outgoing connections at the footer of your reading view.
- Unlinked Mentions: Discovers latent connections between ideas across your vault.
4. Wandering the Clearing
/mycelium— The Mycelium exploration view. Wander the visual map of connections directly./daily— The Bloom: a single note surfaced communally each day. Our alternative to the feed: not personalized to manipulate you, not infinite, not addictive. Just one good human thought per day./random— The serendipitous walk. Discover unexpected ideas on demand.
5. Sovereign Isolation: garden-mycelium: false
Standard Garden honors the need for quiet focus. If you publish on a custom domain (a professional portfolio, client galleries, academic research) and prefer not to be aggregated into the public Mycelium directory or the daily communal feed, set garden-mycelium: false in your root note. Your notes stay fully live and indexable on your own domain, in complete privacy from the wider garden. The root note and its keys are explained in Your Garden’s Front Page.
6. What Hyphe reads, and where it runs
- Where: everything runs on Cloudflare’s own AI (Workers AI), the company that already hosts Standard Garden. No third-party AI service is involved, and no model is trained on your notes.
- What it stores: a vector, a list of numbers, per note, so that similar ideas can be found. The text itself stays in your garden.
- Which notes: public and unlisted notes. Private notes never reach the AI. On Pro, the setting Hyphe reads my private notes (
garden-hyphe-private: truein your root note) lets Hyphe also search them, for you alone: nobody else sees an answer drawn from your private notes. - Leaving the Mycelium: with
garden-mycelium: false, your notes stay in your own Hyphe but are never used to answer anyone else’s question. - When you ask it a question about a note (for example Inquire in the editor), that note’s text is sent to the same Cloudflare AI to produce the questions, and is not kept.
