Themes & Design Tokens

The Standard Garden Obsidian plugin turns frontmatter metadata into a live, typographic design system. You can style individual notes or your entire workspace using bare frontmatter keys that map directly to CSS variables with zero abstraction.

1. How Tokens Work

The plugin reads frontmatter keys in the active note, checks them against the canonical token dictionary, and injects a matching CSS variable with !important onto html body:

---
font-text: "EB Garamond"
optical-ratio: 1.25
color-light-accent: "#b45309"
---

Translates at runtime directly to:

html body {
  --font-text: "EB Garamond" !important;
  --optical-ratio: 1.25 !important;
  --color-light-accent: #b45309 !important;
}

The key name is the CSS property name minus the -- prefix. No namespace prefix, no extra configuration.

2. Built-in Curated Themes

Standard Garden includes 27+ curated themes crafted for typography and long-form reading. You can activate a theme globally in plugin settings or apply it to a single note:

---
theme: humanist
---

Every theme in the plugin’s Default Theme menu works as a theme: value. A few to start from:

Theme Character & Atmosphere Recommended Use
humanist A warm, approachable theme with organic typography. Long-form essays and literature.
forest A dark, green-tinted theme inspired by deep woods. Natural history, field notes, ecology.
documentation Structured precision for technical reading. Engineering logs, code notes, specifications.
editorial A clean, typography-focused theme for writers. Magazine-style articles and criticism.
gallery A visual-heavy theme that lets images and media lead. Portfolios, photo essays, art documentation.
international A clean, Swiss-style theme with strong grid alignment. Reports and structured essays.
academic A formal, structured theme. Papers and research notes.
book A classic, readable theme optimized for long-form reading. Books and serialized writing.
eink A high-contrast, paper-like theme. E-readers and low-power screens.

You can also switch themes dynamically using the command palette: Standard Garden: Set note theme or by clicking Let’s Hyphe design this in the side panel to generate a custom palette tailored to your note’s subject matter.

3. Typography Tokens

Active when Settings → Standard Garden → Appearance → Standard Design System is enabled. It is off by default, so enabling the plugin never changes how your notes look.

Frontmatter Key CSS Variable Description
font-text --font-text Body text typeface (auto-imported from local or Google Fonts).
font-header --font-header Heading typeface (H1–H6 and inline titles).
font-monospace --font-monospace Code blocks and inline monospace text.
font-interface --font-interface Obsidian UI and menu typography.
optical-ratio --optical-ratio Modular type scale multiplier (1.2 = minor third, 1.25 = major third, 1.333 = perfect fourth).
font-density --font-density Line-height multiplier and baseline density.
prose-width --prose-width Maximum reading measure for paragraphs (e.g. 68ch, 38rlh).
font-weight --font-weight Regular body weight (400).
font-weight-bold --font-weight-bold Bold text weight (600, 700).
font-header-weight --font-weight-header Weight for all headings.
font-header-letter-spacing --font-header-letter-spacing Heading letter spacing (e.g. -0.02em).
font-header-line-height --font-header-line-height Heading line height multiplier.
font-header-style --font-header-style Heading style (normal or italic).
font-feature --font-feature OpenType font features for prose ("'liga', 'kern'").
font-variation --font-variation Variable font axis settings ("'wght' 450").

4. Color Tokens

Light Theme Palettes

Frontmatter Key CSS Variable Target
color-light-background --color-light-background Note paper / canvas background.
color-light-foreground --color-light-foreground Primary prose ink color.
color-light-accent --color-light-accent Interactive links and primary signal color.
color-light-red --color-light-red Warning and deletion highlights.
color-light-orange --color-light-orange Caution and pending highlights.
color-light-yellow --color-light-yellow Standard highlighter yellow.
color-light-green --color-light-green Fresh additions and success highlights.
color-light-cyan --color-light-cyan Technical callouts and code highlights.
color-light-blue --color-light-blue Secondary accent and information links.
color-light-purple --color-light-purple Thought callouts and philosophical links.
color-light-pink --color-light-pink Rose accent highlights.
color-light-bold --color-light-bold Dedicated ink color for bold text.
color-light-italic --color-light-italic Dedicated ink color for italic text.

Dark Theme Palettes

The dark mode palette mirrors the exact same structure: replace -light- with -dark- (e.g., color-dark-background, color-dark-foreground, color-dark-accent). Both sets can live simultaneously in the same note, adapting automatically when Obsidian toggles between light and dark modes.

5. Fine Color Control

You can also target specific semantic elements regardless of theme mode:

Frontmatter Key CSS Variable Function
color-header --color-header Color for all headings (H1–H6).
color-bold --color-bold Override for bold text in both modes.
color-italic --color-italic Override for italic text in both modes.
color-accent --color-accent Override for links and active buttons.

Live typographic mirroring: Obsidian as your visual canvas

Standard Garden eliminates the gap between local note-taking and web presentation. The official Obsidian plugin embeds our complete font foundry and design engine directly inside Obsidian. It is opt-in: turn it on in Settings → Standard Garden → Appearance → Standard Design System.
